The Hap'ai Islands of Tonga form the more central group and are not as frequently cruised but we
had heard about how beautiful they are and wanted to explore there. There are many reefs around
the anchorages but we were ready for the challenge. We visited several remote locations, this tiny islet
was so charming. Chuck buys stamps at every place we visit when he remembers to...and that's getting
to be more often. This village of Haafeva on the island of the same name was an example of a typical
community.
The handmade quilt is displayed to show special endearing respect to a departed family member
and we saw many mounted in every cemetary. Pigs roam throughout all the villages but somehow we rarely found pork
so maybe they are pets!!! We had read that the children in many islands need sturdy plastic bags for
carrying schoolbooks in rainy season and we brought these Bank of America bags[Chuck's old job as
investment advisor] to give away along with candy to as many kids as we could.
There are many mat weavers and tapa cloth artist. We bought our share.
